It’s time for Springtime cycling in Hickory, NC!
Spring in North Carolina is a truly beautiful time of year. Not too hot, not too cold… as the little bear might say, “it’s just right!”
And though true hardcore cycling addicts will manage to figure out a way to ride no matter what Mother Nature sends their way, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more comfortable time to ride in the Hickory area than late March to late May. So, are you taking advantage of this great opportunity to get out there on the roads or trails and enjoy some two-wheel fun?
Schedule a ride
It doesn’t need to be anything crazy or exhausting. Just 20 minutes riding around your own neighborhood can be great exercise and loads of fun for the whole family. Of course, setting aside an hour or more offers even more time to explore the area around your house or take on one of Hickory’s numerous bike paths.
But if you don’t take a few minutes to look at your calendar and actually schedule a time, it’s never going to happen. We’re all incredibly busy. So don’t leave it to chance: schedule your ride today!
Visit our Events page to see when we’re having upcoming group rides you can join.
Even if you’re just going on a quick ride around the block, it makes sense to be prepared with the minimum when it comes to safety and comfort. Be sure you have all of the following:
- Bright, (preferably reflective) clothing
- Layers (to accommodate changing temperatures)
- A full water bottle
- Your cell phone and wallet (just in case)
If you have your kids with you, make sure they have their own ID of some form too. No one wants to consider an emergency situation, but safety always needs to come first, and preparation is the most important part of safety.
If you or your kids need appropriate riding apparel for safety and comfort, we can help.
Plan your route
While there’s certainly merit to just heading out and following where the wind takes you, most of us need to be home at some point. Cycling in Hickory, NC can quickly turn into a miserable slog up endless hills and into the dark if you end up lost on some numbered Street-Lane-Circle-Northwest-or-east.
The best option is to plan your route ahead of time so you can make the most of the time you have and enjoy the gorgeous spring weather, but also finish up when your mind and body are both still fully in the game.
There are tons of places online where you can explore fun bicycling routes others have enjoyed already in the Hickory area. If you enjoy using biking apps, MapMyRide and Strava both have a number of routes mapped out in our area. The Hickory Velo Club’s Facebook page and Yahoo Community are also great sources for suggestions.
